Mentor-Mentee Spotlight

Mentor-Mentee

Drs. Laura Krisa and Katie Gant were matched during the 2018 ASIA conference in Rochester, MN. Katie says she enjoyed meeting her mentor during a conference when they had opportunities to talk to their mentors about career paths, special interests and SCI clinical trials involvement. “Her translational expertise and willingness to learn new skills is really inspiring,” said Gant of Krisa.

“Laura introduced me to other scientists and clinicians at the meeting who are working on related research projects.  Thanks to those introductions, I ended up on a committee on the very first day of the conference!”

Laura highly recommends the ASIA Mentorship program.  “ASIA has a lot to offer its members and having someone that knows how to navigate the different avenues to find which one best suits your needs can be beneficial.  For a member that is new to the organization learning about the different opportunities available from someone that has more insight can avoid confusion and provide a positive and helpful environment for someone just getting orientated to the organization.”

If you, at any time throughout the year would like to sign up to be a mentor or mentee, please complete a Mentor/Mentee application form (link below) and return to: asia.office@asia-spinalinjury.org

Another Testimonial...

“I got involved in ASIA’s mentoring program as a first year rehab resident for several reasons: I knew I was interested in spinal cord injury, I knew I wanted to attend the ASIA conference, and I knew I wanted to know at least one person at the conference.

My mentor, Dr. Miner, was kind enough to take me out to lunch beforehand, where we got to know each other. When I arrived in Albuquerque for the conference, I was greeted by Dr. Miner almost immediately after I arrived. Sure enough, at the welcome event that evening, she introduced me to dozens of people in the field, from various regions and professional backgrounds.

I appreciated the cross-pollination, as I was able to introduce her in turn to my fellow residents and fellows from Stanford. I flew back from the conference energized and grateful, feeling like part of the spinal cord injury community.”
